This visual highlights the potential danger of two vessels closing at speed which don't both turn starboard as they should. Knowing what to do and making your intentions clear is essential.

Two vessals colliding

A better way to do it! Clear movement to starboard.

Vessels head on both turning to starboard

The vessel overtaking must give way

Vessel overtaking from behind

'B' is the give way vessel in the situation below

Vessel approaching another and passing to rear

Vessels approaching each other pass 'port-to-port

Two vessels passing in a bouyed channel

A little quiz - if you can read it!

Scroll down for the answers!

The answers:

  1. Both vessels should make an immediate and obvious turn to the right (starboard).

  2. Vessel A should turn to starboard and pass behind vessel B

  3. Vessel A is a sailboat. Power always gives way to sail so vessel B should take avoiding action so as to pass clear of A. NB if vessel A has its sails up but is also running its engines then it is considered a power vessel and therefore normal power on power give way rules apply.

  4. Vessel B is in the overtaking zone and so must pass clear of vessel A.

So how did you do?
