As this example shows a small boat can tow a much larger one alongside. Keep the powered boat slightly astern of the casualty and us plenty of fenders, unless you have RIB. When towing an inboard powered casualty it is often more effective to use the casualty's rudder for steering.

The diagonal does all the work. If you need to reverse you will need another diagonal (as shown by the doted line).

The addition of an 'angel' or 'spring' (in this case a spare anchor) takes up the shocks and protects 'snatching' during towing.
