Course: RYA Short Range Certificate  ~ VHF

Duration: 1 day (1/2 day if converting from 'old'  VHF qualification)

Likely participants: Everyone! As explained in one of the articles a VHF is an essential item of safety kit and thus taking a course to ensure that you know how to use it is key.

Course description:

It is somewhat ironic that to helm a high powered powerboat you don't need any form of licence or qualification yet to use its VHF radio you need a licence for the set and to sit an exam to gain your radio operators certificate. Until recently the qualification that powerboaters studied for was the 'Restricted Certificate of Competence in Radiotelephony (VHF only)'. This is generally a one day course and simply tends to be known as the 'VHF Course'. Life has become somewhat more complicated since 1998 and now the course/exam leads to the new CEPT Short Range Certificate (SRC). This covers the new Global Maritime Distress & Safety System (GMDSS). This subject is too large to go into the level of detail we would like to on this site.
